This presentation is for intermediate and advanced social work clinicians. The goal here is to increase our awareness of this tragic and unfortunate social issue of our time. This workshop will provide an overview of commercial sex trafficking with a definition of what sex trafficking is and what it looks like. This will include a description of online advertisements used by traffickers to advertise their victims. Emphasis will focus on why this crime is so difficult for victims to report and what warning signs and indicators look like that people working in helping professions can use to identify victims. The presentation will explore recruitment strategies and have a look at two types of Traffickers/Pimps and how they operate. This will include offender/victim dynamics such as trauma bonding. The core values of service, social justice, dignity and self-worth, importance of human relationships, integrity and competence, all play a role in what we can do and should do to help eliminate Human Trafficking. The primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, marginalized, and living in poverty (Code of Ethics). Remember, our professional ethics is the core of social work.
